NonEntropy Japan, a distributed storage provider that plays a vital role in the infrastructure of the Web 3.0 society under the slogan of “digitally storing everything in the world,” has started joint research with the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, Osaka University (Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “NonEntropy Japan”; Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Takuo Nishimura) has started a joint research project with Associate Professor Shinichi Arakawa of Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, Osaka University (Suita City, Osaka Prefecture; Chairman: Shojiro Nishio) from April 2021, aiming to establish better methods to strengthen performance and the security of IPFS and Filecoin distributed storage network.

IPFS and Filecoin distributed storage were created to replace HTTP and expected to solve data storage exhaustion problems caused by the recent increasing digital data, monopolistic control of data platforms by few tech giants, and data leakage from anonymous hackers attacks. However, the current challenges are to achieve stable operation of the entire network and to enhance security when the distributed storage expands to universal use.

In this research, we aim to research how to achieve the optimization/improvement of the network performance, labor-saving power, and security in distributed cloud storage based on IPFS and Filecoin. Specifically, our research includes the simulation of the network performance of IPFS and Filecoin distributed cloud storage, measures for security improvement, electricity-saving and data-distribution efficiency, and the study of optimal network placement.

◆Background
IPFS and Filecoin distributed storage are attracting attention as next-generation storage technologies and platforms. Conventional storage has been managed and operated based on the path structure (which folder the file is stored in). Therefore, once a server is invaded, it is exposed to information leakage risk through hacking. On the contrary, in the distributed storage system using IPFS and Filecoin, files are tipped and stored separately with encrypted value (hash value), which is the state of being distributed. As a result, the file’s location becomes unidentical, and therefore, this technology garners the surging attention as a next technology that increases non-falsifiability.

We have decided to conduct joint development with Associate Professor Shinichi Arakawa of the Department of Information Networks, Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, Osaka University, who has produced many cutting-edge research results in the field of information networks in Japan.

◆Outline:
This joint research aims to simulate the network performance of IPFS and Filecoin distributed cloud storage, to improve security measures, to save labor in terms of power efficiency and distributed efficiency, and to solve the problem of optimal data allocation in the network. Currently, 50ZB of cloud storage is in operation worldwide, and the scale is expected to triple in the next five years. As well, we pursue to become a significant player to lead such a data society, and we hope the research will contribute to supporting the further development of the majestic IPFS/Filecoin project and inspire the participants on the same boat.
